What is Big Mood About

In one early scene, the sun is shining as Maggie (Nicola Coughlan) cruises through the town on her scooter, hair and makeup on point, confidence soaring, with a soundtrack to match. The energy is high and anything seems possible. As Maggie tells best friend Eddie (Lydia West), she’s giving a talk at her old school — and it’s going to be incredible. But things soon take a turn. It becomes apparent this is a manic episode – Maggie has bipolar disorder –

and it will soon be followed by a period of debilitating depression. When Eddie’s concern is made clear, the perspective shifts and a sense of uneasiness sets in. Soon enough, events start to spiral out of control. The ensuing chaos is at once both deeply unsettling and really, really funny, often without even stopping to take a breath.Whitehill’s characters are nuanced, flawed, endearing and relatable.

The friendship between Maggie and Eddie, which is central to the story, is both deep rooted and yet dangerously fragile. Moments of silliness take the edge off the heavy, sometimes affronting subject matter — the love actually themed fancy dress birthday party is just one instance — but its not long before things get surreal, even scary. Whitehill creates a false sense of security through humour before sending you crashing back to reality. This perfectly executed technique reflects Maggie’s experience of bipolar disorder, which makes the highs and lows all the more intense.

Final Words

Ready to be put through the ringer emotionally? Then dive in! Although everything about this series is utterly addictive, you’d be smart to pace yourself and stick to one or two episodes at a time. Either way, the heart-wrenching, gut-churning intensity of Big Mood will stick with you long after the final episode. Once you've binged your way through the series, be sure to check out another comedy-drama called Truelove, which is also found on All4.
