Official Trailer of The Way (BBC Drama)
Discontent not only bubbles to the surface, but overflows. Set in the industrial town of Port Talbot, a violent death at the steelworks and a shocking act of protest leads to incredible drama.
What is The Way About?
After years of feeling unheard and underrepresented, the (fictionalised) community in the (very real) town of Port Talbot are fighting back. The livelihoods of local industrial workers – not to mention their physical safety – are constantly under threat. But this, of course, is nothing new. The Way follows the Driscoll family, which has deep roots in the area, roots inextricably entwined with the town’s industrial history.
Protagonist Geoff Driscoll’s (Steffan Rhodri) late father was a striker in the 80s, and was no stranger to the curfews, protests and riots which are in full swing again. However, as things descend into chaos, Geoff and his family find themselves at the centre of a political and media storm, weathering the blame for what ensues.
This directorial debut from national treasure Michael Sheen is a challenging but rewarding watch, brought to life by a stellar cast including Sheen himself, Steffan Rhodri and Luke Evans.
Final Words
If you’re up for a dark, winding journey into Welsh industrial politics, familial ties, and even some magical realism, look no further. It’s certainly not an easy watch, but the passion and energy of The Way will stay with you long after the credits roll. Fans of moody, Welsh dramas should also check out Hidden, which is available in full on iPlayer.
